I often find that as a woman we tend to be really hard on ourselves. We are mean, cruel and vicious to our selves, and sometimes, we don’t even realize it. We have been taught from society standards that we are not thin enough, we are not pretty enough, and we are just outright not enough. We are not worthy of love, happiness, joy, and all the good things. Who thought of this? Who was the one that was like yeah, we need to make sure those women hate everything about themselves so that they will be insecure forever and basically do as society tells them.
We are the ones who carry life inside of us. We are the ones who protested for voting rights. We are the ones who have demanded equal pay (a fight that is still very much so going on). We are the ones who marched on Washington to show that we will not be silenced. We are the ones who must stick together. We must be kind to each other. We must be kind to ourselves.
You know that inner mean girl that is super mean to you? It’s time, it’s time to shut her down and say, bye Felicia! The way you talk to yourself should be the same way you talk to a friend. You must remind yourself how strong, beautiful and capable you are. You are all of those things. I encourage you to start practicing something that is super important, especially as women, self-care. It’s SO important and we must take care of ourselves.
Here are some exercises that you might find helpful in your journey of self-love because believe me, it is a journey (one I am still on and will continue to be on, which is a good thing, I promise!):
- Find 2-3 quotes that resonate with you, write them down, post them somewhere that you will see them often. One of mine that I have in my office, right next to this very computer is “There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” On days where I am feeling down or frustrated about something and I see this quote, I am reminded that there is joy in every circumstance and it helps me put things in perspective. It’s simple but effective.
- Write yourself a love letter. Ok, I know this one seems a little crazy but hear me out- you have written love notes to your significant other before, have you not? So you can do it for yourself too. Sit down, maybe have a glass of wine (if you drink) and you need to calm your nerves about writing a letter to yourself. And just start writing. You’ll be surprised all the things that come out. I have done this multiple times in my journey of self-love and again, every time I get low or upset about something, this is something I know I can come to. It’s nice to remind yourself that you are worthy and beautiful and it’s ok that everything isn’t perfect.
- Make “you” time. You time can be watching your favorite show. You time can be painting your nails, it can be taking a walk outside in nature, it can be taking a bath, it can be ANYTHING. Pick something that you know brings you joy and genuinely makes you feel better and go do that. For me, one of the things I love to do is get outside. I don’t do it as often as I should but I am lucky that I work from home and I am able to get up and take a walk if I feel like it. I also live in the beautiful state of Colorado and I am definitely going to be taking advantage of some new hiking trails once it warms up a little more. Although it was literally 70 degrees today and perfect. I wanted to take my laptop outside and work. Maybe tomorrow?
Though we are not perfect, we are humans after all, I hope that you take some of my words into consideration. Remember that you are so worthy of ALL the good feelings and all the good things. If someone hasn’t told you today already- You are perfectly imperfect just the way you are. Don’t let society tell you otherwise. We must retrain our brains to be kind to ourselves and it starts inside, it starts with you. So what are you waiting for? Go do you and go be your beautiful self.
